What is Vinyl Fencing? What is PVC?
Saratoga Rail Fence vinyl is a compound that is formulated from raw materials that include polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resin*, UV inhibitors (TiO2), impact modifiers, stabilizers, and toners.

*PVC resin is produced with the raw materials: crude oil, natural gas, and chloride.

How is Vinyl Fencing made?
This can best be explained using the manufacturing of profiles and the fabrication of those profiles.

Profiles: Vinyl fencing originates as a PVC powder form resin. When blended with the proper compounds this formulation is fed into an extruder where it is formed into a malleable vinyl. The malleable vinyl is then fed though a die into the shape of the finished profile. Vacuum technology is used to retain the malleable vinyl’s proper shape. Water is then introduced to cool the vinyl to the desired final rigid state. See Engineering/Technology for the extrusion processes used in this process.

Fabrication: After the manufacturing of the profiles Saratoga Rail Fence cuts the profiles to the proper length for each specific fence. Holes are also routed into the appropriate fence component (rails, posts, and pickets) and assembled into fence sections for finished fences.
What is Virgin Vinyl?
This is the term used for a vinyl product that does not contain recycled products. Recycled products that are brought into an extrusion plant may contain impurities or lower grade vinyl. Low-grade or impure recycled materials can seriously affect the vinyl product’s flexibility, impact resistance, and UV inhibition. Saratoga vinyl fencing products are extruded using only virgin materials unless specified green* or recycled*.

*Green/Recycled: Vinyl fencing products sold by Saratoga Rail Fence using either of these designations are solely intended to introduce a less expensive option to our superior virgin profiles. Our green/recycled product use only recycled vinyl materials that are recycled scrap from our own extrusion plant. This helps guarantee that no impurities or low-grade materials will be used.

Note: There is a difference in performance of virgin vinyl products versus recycled products even when the recycled product is controlled in house. Customers have to weigh the savings in cost versus that performance.

What colors does Vinyl Fence come in?
We offer all our Saratoga Rail Fence vinyl styles in white and tan. We also offer limited fence styles in stone gray and clay (Call for styles). We also offer our TruGrain vinyl fencing in white, tan, and pebblestone gray.

How long does Vinyl Fencing last?
Saratoga Rail Fence vinyl fence is designed to last a lifetime.

Will Vinyl Fence yellow over time?
Saratoga Rail Fence vinyl fence is manufactured with 10 parts per 100 of Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) and ultraviolet inhibitors. This prevents yellowing and allows us to back our product with a Transferable Lifetime Limited Warranty.

Does Vinyl Fence break?
Saratoga Rail Fence vinyl fence will break. Any fence product will break if enough force is applied. However, Saratoga Rail Fence vinyl fence is formulated using the highest quality impact modifiers to ensure the greatest impact resistance available. All our vinyl fence products are engineered to exceed the ASTM impact standards set forth by the fence industry.

Does vinyl fence chalk as it weathers?
All vinyl fencing will experience some weathering over time. Chalking will happen eventually but with the high protection capabilities of our durable non-chalking TiO2 this will be kept at a bare minimum. See Engineering/Technology.

How does Vinyl Fence stand up to wind?
Saratoga Rail Fence designs all our vinyl fences to withstand normal wind load. The importance of wind load is always taken into consideration when designing our solid privacy fences. We offer lockable tongue and groove vertical boards to withstand higher wind load.

Installation plays a major role in all vinyl fences withstanding wind load. Regional weather patterns can dictate special circumstances for how vinyl fence will be installed. High wind areas should consider installing extra-long posts deeper in the ground.

We also take height into consideration. 8’ high fences require extra reinforcement, are assembled 6’ wide versus 8’ wide standard panels, and extra aluminum post stiffeners can be installed in the post to add additional strength to withstand higher wind load.

Does Vinyl Fence become brittle in winter?
Vinyl fence becomes less flexible in the cold weather. Saratoga Rail Fence vinyl products are designed to withstand normal temperature changes. The impact modifiers that are used to prevent the product from breaking also help the product withstand the cold weather conditions. Under normal use and impact a Saratoga Rail Fence vinyl fence will perform well. If a car hits our vinyl fence or a foreign object runs or flies directly into our fence in cold or warm weather it will break.  Damaged fence parts are easily replaced.

Does Vinyl Fence expand?
Yes. Vinyl fence expands and contracts under normal weather conditions. Saratoga Rail Fence goes to great lengths to insure that our fences are designed with expansion and contraction in mind.

Will Vinyl Fence crack, chip, peel, or rot?

Can I paint my Vinyl Fence?
No. It will also void the warranty.

Can I add Vinyl Fence sections long after a job is done?

Yes. Eventually you will have some weathering and the new fence might not exactly match, but it will be fairly close.

Can I get custom styles made?

Yes. As long as the fence being designed is structurally sound and we have the profiles to make it we will design and fabricate it. There may be an extra cost involved.

How high can I make my Vinyl Fence?

Height depends on the style. We do fabricate 8’ high privacy fences, but there can be local restrictions so check your local building code guidelines before installing. We design the 8’ high privacy fence panel 6’ wide and add special reinforcement. We also recommend that the vinyl fence posts be reinforced with aluminum post stiffeners.

Can I use Vinyl Fence for my porch or deck railing?

Yes. When properly installed and reinforced with products that we have to aid a porch or deck installation our vinyl fence makes a great product for any porch or deck.

How is Vinyl Fence put together?
Saratoga Rail Fence vinyl sections usually come fully assembled. The horizontal rails are pre-crimped or notched with a crimping tool. The resulting crimp or notch allows the fence rail to slide into the pre-routed holes provided in the post and hold the fence in place.

Should Vinyl Fence posts be cemented in the ground?
Yes. Concrete should be used to secure a vinyl post in the ground.

Is Vinyl Fence bad for our environment?
